The Town of Southern Shores is the gateway to the Outer Banks’ northern beaches, and it has quite a different feel from other Outer Banks locales.

With no public beach access except to residents, homeowners and in-town renters, the Southern Shores’ oceanfront is one of the least crowded stretches of beach on the north and central Outer Banks. A protective dune line borders the row of oceanfront homes, which includes a visually pleasing, low-density mix of luxury estates, classic beach houses and the town’s signature “flat-top” cottages, designed by artist Frank Stick and built in the 1940s and ‘50s. Some of the town’s semi-oceanfront homes require crossing busy N.C. 12, the main thoroughfare of the northern Outer Banks, to get to the beach, while others are on the east side of the road and therefore don’t require that crossing.

Most visitors see Southern Shores only from N.C. 12, Ocean Boulevard, however, there’s much more to the town. Side streets ramble through scrubbily-vegetated dunes and into a lush maritime forest with delightful live-oak shade and some of the highest elevations on the Outer Banks.

Southern Shores has less than 3,000 year-round residents and is predominantly residential, lending the town a very quiet demeanor, even amidst the bustle of summer visitors. However, its small amount of commercial development combined with the neighboring towns’ amenities offers all of the necessities within convenient proximity. Restaurants and coffee shops, grocery stores, a pharmacy, home-improvement stores and shops are in town or nearby, and the semi-private Duck Woods Country Club and golf course is in the town. A multi-use path connects the residential and commercial areas of Southern Shores.
